In her mind, that’s all she’s good for, and it’s the reason the Frasers have taken her in. She believes that when she starts her period, she’ll be sent away to work as a prostitute. It’s almost like Jamie wants to change Fanny’s fate. I love that we get this moment and the reasoning.

Jamie doesn’t want Fanny to become the thing that she seems to believe she’s destined to be. It’s actually linked to something that Roger has told him about the word in the future, but it does also link to something in today. It turns out that Jamie views it as a prostitute’s name.
